Who We Are
The Maud Powell String Institute is a nonprofit pre-college string program for ages 4-18 based in Novato, CA. MPSI is a highly accessible preparatory program, providing a comprehensive and high-quality classical music education to immigrant and underserved communities in Marin County. We are a low-tuition program and offer additional financial aid for low income families who wish to learn at a high level. We also supply all students with high-quality instruments and equipment. Our program encourages the finest quality training from an early age, ensuring proper set up for long lasting results, while fostering a supportive and collaborative environment. We are here to make a difference in our community!
True equity in music education means access combined with excellence. Equal access should result in equal excellence. We believe students utilizing financial aid are entitled to the same highly skilled and expertly trained teachers as students paying premium rates at top-tier pre-college programs. As such, the quality of the training we provide is an absolute priority. Our teachers are highly trained professionals and pedagogically equipped to deliver results effectively. We strictly follow Mimi Zweig’s (one of America’s finest and most respected pedagogues) teaching methods and philosophy, which is a combination of the Suzuki method and Paul Rolland’s approach. Her philosophy is based on developing natural physical motions and strong technical foundation early on, which can then allow for musical sensitivity and confidence in playing. In order to become certified in Mimi’s curriculum, our teachers undergo years of highly specialized pedagogical training and seminars, observation, hands-on experience and string pedagogy lessons. This ensures they are prepared to teach young beginners at the highest level and deliver excellent results.
